Before introducing Bunker Armour® to the market, we decided to thoroughly test the product in order to ensure that our product can withstand all of the elements that are experienced over time in any bunker.
Testing is ongoing and we continue to improve and advance our product manufacture, product performance, availability and installation methodology.

How does Bunker Armour® differ from other bunker liners?

There are many differences but herewith the main differences and their benefits:

Soft & Flexible Product

Bunker Armour® is not concrete or made up of any hard materials. This has many benefits, but most importantly the product is malleable, meaning it can be moulded and retains its ability to be moulded throughout its lifespan. It is “soft but firm” and is applied as a thick, compacted layer, ensuring that it can withstand impact, general wear and tear, as well as anything the elements can throw at it. This also makes it very easy to repair and if bunkers are “grown” through hard-edging, the product can easily be replenished by your own course staff.

Steep Angles

Bunker Armour® is capable of being installed on steep angles, well in excess of the suggested angle of repose for USGA spec bunker sand i.e. 28 degrees.

To date Bunker Armour® has been installed, with great success, on angles in excess of 60 degrees with the greatest being 64 degrees. The product only requires a very thin layer of bunker sand on it, although, if maintained correctly, can sustain without any sand covering it at all.

Aesthetics

Other bunker liners look “invasive”, “ugly” or “unappealing” when exposed, particularly the “hard” bunker liners which are often grey or even black (bitumen-based products).
Exposed concrete or hard liners also pose a threat to damaging golf and maintenance equipment, as well as creating awkward bounces when struck by a golf ball.

Due to this fact, the prescribed solution is to cover the bunker faces with excessive amounts of sand (some product suppliers insist on a minimum of 10cm (4 inches)) to avoid this, thus creating another set of problems, mainly that of plugged lies, difficult maintenance, unconventional playing conditions (excessive sand creating an awkward shot setup for golfers when positioned on the slope) and an increase in the volume of bunker sand required.

With Bunker Armour®, there is only a “splash” of sand required to be present on the bunker faces as the product is maleable and “absorbs” the impact of both golf ball and club strikes. Even when it is exposed, it is barely noticeable as it is made from and looks like the sand in the bunker.

Reducing Sand

Unlike hard products that demand up to 10cm (4 inches) of sand in coverage throughout the bunker, Bunker Armour® minimises the amount of bunker sand required as Bunker Armour® does not require excessive sand coverage on the bunker faces.

With the average bunker having 50% of its total area being slope, Bunker Armour® brings about a 40% reduction in sand requirement overall.
The “top up” amount (suggested as between 20-40% annually by the USGA) would also be significantly reduced by this fact.
