To ensure that Bunker Armour® is tested to experience the harshest conditions, we insist that the golf clubs where we install our test sites issue us with the “most problematic” bunkers possible.
Confident????
Yes we are! Our Bunker Armour® product can be installed in any environment and can withstand even the toughest conditions, new or existing.
We love bunkers with large, steep faces. There is no limitation as to the angle upon which Bunker Armour® can easily be installed.
Typically, you will see that in the other surrounding bunkers, the sand colour is significantly darker due to sand contamination which is common with other, inferior type bunker liners.
This is an aerial photo of our test bunker at The Els Club at Copperleaf after the product was in place for 25 months. Spot which one is fitted with Bunker Armour®?
This was our first installation in January 2016 and it’s still perfect!
The sand in the neighboring bunker is evidence of the typical contamination experienced at the course through exposure to severe summer thunderstorms that damage the bunkers to the extent that it takes the ground staff 8 days to repair back to a playable condition.
Bunker Armour® withstands these elements with outstanding results and absolutely no damage or requirement for repair or for any special treatment.
The steepest face of this bunker (as above in the Before & After pics) is at 56 degrees of slope.
We were invited to install a test bunker at Parkview Golf Club’s iconic par-3 3rd hole. This is the home course of the late, great Bobby Locke and we keenly obliged.
Our bunker is one of 3 test bunkers on this hole and we love the idea of Bunker Armour® being tested against 2 other very popular bunker lining choices.
That’s the best way to test them … by the way, we got our favourite bunker … the one no one else wanted. We love the tough ones to show off Bunker Armour®!
After more than 18 months of research and development as well as intensive analysis and monitoring of our first test site, we installed our second test site at Country Club, Johannesburg on the Rocklands Course.
Once again, we selected their most problematic bunker that experienced regular washouts, extensive sand contamination and ineffective drainage.
Bunker Armour® transformed this disaster into the perfect bunker!
The steepest part of the bunker face is at 46 degrees of slope.
Whilst we were busy installing the perfect bunker, Golf Data, who are the largest golf course maintenance and construction company in South Africa, asked us to collaborate with them and install a Bunker Armour® bunker for them at the 18th green too.
They clearly know their stuff!
This Bunker Armour® installation was not only a product test, but also to measure the ease and efficiency of the actual installation process.
The bunker was installed in entirety in a period of 6 hours with only 5 staff members. The installation also included a full drainage upgrade, thus the process could have been quicker if the drainage solution was in a condition to meet our high standards.
The steepest part of this bunker face is 38 degrees of slope.
The word is out about how great the Bunker Armour® product is and The River Club requested the installation of a demo bunker to consider for assessment for installation for the full golf course.
With some new innovations, Bunker Armour® was installed in their busiest bunker, the practice bunker, and the members and guests can now enjoy a perfect bunker whilst they assess their upcoming choice of bunker liner.
After 5 months of great performance, we decided to test our new emulsion and further harden and enhance the Bunker Armour® on the bunker faces.
With 4 personell we brushed the bunker sand off the walls, loosened the Bunker Armour®, sprayed on our emulsion, compacted the product and then returned the sand up the bunker faces.
The total time to complete this was 3 hours! As simple as that.
Constant and never-ending improvement and we strive to continue to develop the already perfect Bunker Armour® product.
With that, this Bunker Armour® installation was performed not only to showcase the brilliance of the product, but also to test a new process whereby one no longer needs to have any sand on the bunker faces at all. A new type of application was applied to the bunker faces whereby sand adheses to the Bunker Armour® lining creating the appearance that there is a substantial amount of bunker sand on the actual face.
Although the Bunker Armour® lining has the same type of appearance, this further enhances the aesthetics of the product and can be applied every couple of seasons.
The steepest part of this bunker face is 50.7 degrees of slope.
This installation was the final test to convince Country Club, Johannesburg of the superiority of Bunker Armour®.
This particular bunker was deemed to be the worst on the Woodmead Course and needed urgent rebuilding. The club was considering the lowering of the steep, greenside bunker face in order to repair the bunker. This would have resulted in a severe change to the framing and aesthetics of the treacherous approach shot into this awesome par-5.
Bunker Armour® was efficiently installed and no design changes to the hole or bunker were necessary.
The steepest part of this bunker face is 51 degrees of slope.
November 2023 – Bunker Barrier Trial Bunker
After the successful installation of the Bunker Barrier product at a few prominent South African courses, along with course construction company, Golf Data, we decided to introduce the product to Dainfern Country Club as a further bunker lining solution to consider.
Promising optimal performance at a fraction of the cost of other premium bunker liners, the Bunker Barrier product is showing off nicely in the newly constructed greenside bunker at the beautiful 6th hole. With restricted available budget, we look forward to the members feedback and hope to be installing Bunker Barrier in all the bunkers soon.
January 2020 – Bunker Armour® Trial Bunker –
Practice Bunker
This magnificent Gary Player Design golf course and golf estate was designed and opened in 1992 and has played host to many premiere professional and amateur events.
With a bunker renovation due, Bunker Armour® has been chosen as the preferred choice for a bunker liner and we were very excited to showcase our brilliant product at the club.
Once again, we chose the busiest and most problematic bunker, that being the “practice” bunker and immediately, the bunker is playable and pearly white.
This bunker was installed in conjunction with Golf Data (South Africa’s largest golf turf management and construction company).
During “lockdown” Bunker Armour® embarked on an exciting journey to have the Bunker Armour® product installed in a trial bunker in New South Wales, Australia.
The requirement was very different from our normal as it involved “revetting”.
The client was tired of having to redo the revetting every couple of years and the revetted faces would collapse before the process was redone.
Bunker Armour® was installed higher up the existing steep faces and above that, Bunker Armour® was used as a foundation between the sods to add structural strength. Bunker Armour® Revetting Solution was born!
A year and a half later and the product is still perfect!
We are eagerly awaiting to proceed with the project soon.
The fabulous Gary Player Design Outeniqua Course at the world-renowned Fancourt premiere lifestyle resort needed their greenside bunkers renovated.
After installing a trial bunker, the board opted for Bunker Armour® over other leading bunker liner products as their bunker solution of choice.
With Gary Player’s characteristic high and steep faced bunkers framing the greens, the Bunker Armour® product’s ability to be installed on even the steepest faces, combined with the fact that the Bunker Armour® solution would present a sand saving of more than 60%, the renovation went ahead with Phillip Basson Course Construction as our appointed contractor to get these bunkers to “perfect”.
After a number of huge storms that resulted in flooding in the areas, Bunker Armour® impressed and lived up to its performance promise.
We are proud to say that the end-result was being awarded the contract to renovate the Montagu Course thereafter.
The results speak for themselves.
South Africa’s largest golf construction business, Golf Data, did an outstanding job of renovating and rejuvenating the greenside bunkers at the magnificent Els Club at Copperleaf with the Bunker Armour® solution.
After installing a trial bunker in 2016, the long-term performance of the Bunker Armour® product was obvious and we were excited to finally get the green light to have the product installed.
Golf Data Construction were impressed with the ease of installation of the Bunker Armour® product and the course is once again a shining light on the Ernie Els Design portfolio.
At an undisclosed site in Ireland, Bunker Armour® installed a “first of it’s kind” trial bunker for the premiere club’s board to review and assess for installation at a later stage.
For the first time, the Bunker Armour® solution included our bespoke “Bunker Armour® Sand Stabiliser” which was installed beneath the Bunker Armour® solution to turn soft dune sand into a perfect base upon which the Bunker Armour® could be installed and compacted.
Previously the bunker had “revetting” as the bunker face solution, but the high maintenance and the requirement to regularly redo the revetting (every 18-24 months) saw the club make the obvious choice to install Bunker Armour® as the solution.
Low maintenance, a massive cost-saving, less bunker sand and no requirement to redo the faces anymore!
The trial has performed outstandingly and we are looking forward to introducing our Bunker Armour® product to the Irish market in the coming months!
Gary Player Country Club
In December 2023, we installed our Bunker Armour® product in the practice bunker at the Gary Player Country Club, 2-weeks before the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
Mr. Gary Player himself spent a couple of hours with us and was suitably impressed with the outcome of the Bunker Armour® installation in this bunker, as well as the trial bunker that we installed at the 8th hole in 2021. He is excited to know that the resort are planning to upgrade their bunkers with the Bunker Armour® product at some stage.
The pro’s were also impressed with the playability and aesthetics of the intended solution.
What an honour to be approached by Gary Player Country Club, home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge and recently the South African Open to install a trial bunker at the most recognised golf course in South Africa.
This bunker demanded that we recover the original lines and boundaries of the bunker which had receded over the years, as well as reintroducing the original front edge, thus making the bunker more intimidating from the fairway and returning it to its rightful ranking of the “hardest hole on the course.
Installed just 2 weeks before the 2021 South African Open, the Bunker Armour® lined bunker caught much attention with the perfect white bunker sand and was 4 times quicker to recover after the ferocious downpours that hampered the event.
